Fall ‘Crafts & Drafts’ with Friends of Rose Memorial Library

Wednesday, Oct. 25, 6-8pm

Industrial Arts Brewing Company

Join us for a fun night out while making a unique craft. To celebrate the season each person will make a beautiful set of tea towles with a leaf print design. Tickets are $40 and include the craft and all supplies, 1 drink, and raffle ticket for a fabulous door prize.

Rose Memorial Library is proud to participate in The Great Giveback 2023. We are collecting supplies for Pets Alive (pet food, treats, toys and bedding) and Rockland County Against Hunger (non-perishable food items). Drop-off at the boxes next to the circulation desk now through Oct. 31.  Thank you for your generosity!

 

OCTOBER PROGRAMS

 

ADULT & SENIOR

 

Loom Weaving

Monday, Oct. 2, 4-6pm

Learn how to make a woven wall hanging using simple materials – yarn, a tapestry needle, some cardboard, and a fork!  You will first learn how to create an easy loom out of cardboard, then learn how to weave, change yarns, and make some different patterns.

 

Nature Foraging Walks

Monday, Oct. 2 & 30, 9-11am

Take a  stroll with an expert forager and see what we can find!  We will explore medicinal, culinary and other possibilities for what’s growing this time of year.  This will take place in Rockland County  – the exact meetup location will be emailed to registrants.

 

Abstract Watercolor on Tissue Paper

Wednesday, Oct. 4, 11am-1pm

Learn to paint with watercolors loosely on a textured surface. The focus here will be on color and form. Everyone will do their own unique painting, based more on the process and less on instruction.

 

Coffee Filter Flowers

Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2-4pm

Create a beautiful, year-round flower out of coffee filters. Easy and relaxing.

 

Pop-Up Cards: Flower Bouquet

Wednesday, Oct. 11, 4-6pm

Learn to create a card with a surprise! Pop ups can bring a little pizzazz to your cards.

 

Handmade Paper

Monday, Oct. 16, 4-5:30pm

Learn the Art of Handmade Paper. Turn old papers (and other things!) into treasured handmade papers. We will learn different methods, add color & embed various embellishments into the paper such as other papers, metallic foil, botanicals, string, etc. Everyone will get a chance to create at least 1 paper. This project takes up a lot of space so the class is limited to only 6 people.  

 

Zentangle & Neurographic Art

Wednesday, Oct. 18, 3-5pm

In this class we will explore a few special methods to use art as therapy to calm your mind. We will be working with a combination of Sharpie markers, Micron pens, watercolors, markers and colored pencils. Teens & tweens are also welcome to join.

 

The Art of Shibori

Monday, Oct. 23, 11am-1pm

Learn to create Shibori Patterns on tea towels by dyeing with natural Indigo. We will create a dye vat and learn how to fold our tea towels in various ways to create different patterns, then we will dye our towels. Dress appropriately as we will be using dye and we may be outside for a portion of the class.

 

Acrylics Open Studio

Wednesday, Oct. 18, 11am-1pm

Join us for an open studio to explore acrylics. Bring your imagination or your own reference photos to work from. Supplies are provided.

 
 

Brunch Book Club: The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden

Saturday, Oct. 21, 11am-12pm

Join us for a lively discussion of our October title over pastries and coffee. We are reading The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden – a thriller with a a twist! Copies are available behind the front desk or through our online Catalog.  New members are always welcome – bring a friend!

Herbal Arts

Mullein Cough Syrup: Monday, Oct. 9, 4-6pm

Tea Talk: Monday, Oct. 23, 4-6pm

Learn about natural ways to stay healthy this season. We will chat while making some products using various herbal preparations. All ages welcome.

Beginner Watercolors Series

Seascape: Wednesday, Oct. 25, 11am-1pm

Join us for a beginner’s class to explore the special quality of watercolors. We will enjoy the process and learn essential watercolor techniques as we paint.

 

Fiber Arts & Craft Circle

Monday, Oct. 2, 6-7pm

Join us and bring your projects. All kinds of crafts welcome: knit/crochet, paper quilling, weaving, needle felt, needle point, macramé, embroidery, etc. It’s more fun and social together! Come learn a new craft or lend a hand. You can also finish something we worked on in class. 

 

Origami: Gift Bag & Envelope

Monday, Oct. 30, 1-3pm

The ancient art of Origami, or paper folding, is not as hard as you may think! It’s a great way to focus the mind while you create amazing forms. Join us to make a classic gift bag and envelope.

Pumpkin Carving

Come carve your own pumpkin! Pumpkins and tools provided. Enjoy spooky Halloween snacks while you create. Grades 4 and up.

Owl Drawing with Artist Danielle Lafayette

Monday, Oct. 23, 6-7:30pm

Create an owl drawing using line techniques and various markings to make texture, in this fun and creative class for grades 4 and up.

 

YOUTH & FAMILY

Little Yoga (ages 2.5-5)

Wednesday Oct. 4 & 18, 2:30-3:15pm

Join Valerie Vendrame in a lively introductory Yoga class for preschoolers. Children should wear comfortable clothes. Register for each class separately online.

Pumpkin Contest

The Book Character pumpkin contest is happening now!  Come in and view the creations and let us know your favorites.  Return your pumpkins by October 11!

 

Preschool Pumpkin Decorating (ages 2-5)

Monday, Oct. 23, 10:30am, 2:30pm or 4:30pm

Decorate a mini pumpkin with glue, wiggly eyes, pipe cleaners, feathers and sequins. Please register for only one session.

Fun with Play Dough

Wednesday, Oct. 25, 10:30am or 2:30pm

Together, preschoolers and their caregivers will squeeze, roll and cut out fun shapes with Play Dough. Decorate your creations with cut-up pipe cleaners and colorful sticks.
